Episode 9 | The Attraction Marketing Show

Helen Martin flew 35 hours from South Australia to sit down for this conversation.

She's made that trip thirteen times — mostly for AttractionMarketing.com, as a student, then as one of the original mentors, then as a trainer and community leader. Each trip a commitment. Each one a signal of exactly the kind of person she is.

Her background reads like a corporate highlight reel: accounting degree, marketing degree, credentials in law, sixteen years as a general manager — the Australian equivalent of CEO. A farewell dinner attended by five hundred people when she left.

None of it prepared her for network marketing.

In Episode 9 of the Attraction Marketing Show, host JT DeBolt sits down with Helen for one of the most substantive conversations in the show's run. She covers the identity crisis that followed leaving corporate, what it actually felt like to get ghosted by the corporate friends she'd known for years, how she built the Online Crew brand from a pair of captain's hats off a cruise ship, why she now earns more than she did as a GM — with 14 income streams — and what she believes is the only thing any network marketer truly owns.

The GM Who Lost Her Identity Overnight

Helen lost her mother at fourteen. She grew up fierce, independent, and determined to make something of herself. She earned multiple degrees, built a law credential, recovered from a serious illness that left her unable to move her arms or legs for eight months — and came back stronger. She climbed to General Manager at a company she stayed with for sixteen years.

Then a family bereavement prompted a move to the country. And she made a choice that surprised even her: she resigned.

"When you do something for a very long time, it becomes a big part of who you are. I took the General Manager label off me and I didn't know who I was. I kind of lost my identity — and it scared me to just be a mum without knowing what I was going to do."

The corporate world had given her structure, status, and certainty. The country gave her space — to be present for her boys, to breathe, to think. After about six months of gym classes, a personal training certification, and Zumba instruction, she realized her brain needed more. Something businessy.

That's when network marketing found her.

She went in with every qualification and every corporate skill she'd spent decades building. It didn't help.

"None of that prepared me for the journey I've been on. I had to go back to square one. And you guys here at AttractionMarketing.com believed in me more than I believed in myself — no matter what my past was with business and degrees. That just says anyone can do this, as long as you've got the drive and you're willing to do the work."

Three Months of Getting Ghosted by Corporate Friends

Helen did what every new network marketer is told to do. She made her list of top one hundred. Her corporate network — the people she'd worked alongside for years, the colleagues who'd shown up to her five-hundred-person farewell dinner — were at the top of it.

It did not go well.

"I have never felt — because I was so well respected — I knew what I was doing, I was confident. And then I tried this new avenue. I go back to some of my friends with my exciting new business venture. And people I'd known for years started ghosting me. Didn't return my messages. I was in tears saying to my husband: I am not a dumb person. But I can't crack this business. I feel incompetent."

About three to four months of that. Close to giving up. And then a choice: either this isn't for me, or I find another way.

She found another way.

A Facebook ad for attraction marketing. A foreign concept to someone who'd barely been on social media. A steep learning curve that her corporate background did absolutely nothing to flatten. And a community that believed in her before she believed in herself.

Eight months after starting, AttractionMarketing.com asked her to join as a mentor. She was one of three original mentors. The other two have since left. Helen is still there — thirteen transatlantic trips later.

The Only Thing You Actually Own in Network Marketing

Helen has a clear and consistent message for anyone building in this industry, drawn from hard experience: the only asset you control is your personal brand.

Not the company. Not the products. Not the comp plan. Not the pricing. Not the distribution.

"The only thing I can control in my network marketing business is me — what I do and what I don't do. I can't control what the company does. So building a personal brand is a level of protection. It's the only thing that's truly yours."

She's lived this lesson at full cost. Her previous company shut down without warning — hundreds of thousands of people affected overnight. She had to start over with a new company.

She did. She rank advanced five times in five months.

Because her name, her community, and her relationship with her audience belonged to her — not to the company. When the company disappeared, Helen Martin didn't.

"When you've built a personal brand, it doesn't matter which company you're with behind the scenes. I can still show up as Helen Martin, give value, and it doesn't really matter which company that is. The relationship is with me."

Her advice for anyone currently in a company they're not sure about: don't spend your energy trying to predict what the company will do. Spend it building something no one can take from you. Your brand. Your audience. Your reputation as someone worth following.

That's the insurance policy that actually pays out.

The Captain's Hats That Built a Community

The Online Crew — Helen's personal brand and coaching community — started with a cruise ship souvenir.

She'd been following someone online who had a distinctive theme going and thought: I want to do something different. Something that makes people stop scrolling. Shortly after, her family came back from a cruise and her boys had captain's hats.

"I had these captain's hats, and I thought — I'm gonna do a cruise ship type of theme. I need to call my community something. And I'm gonna call it the Online Crew — as in crew, as in a ship's crew. And I'm the Online Crew Captain."

Six years of consistent building later, the brand has a life of its own. Seth Godin's purple cow — if you drive past a regular cow you don't notice it, but a purple cow makes you stop. The captain's hat, the beach backdrop, the nautical identity in an industry full of generic laptop-and-coffee aesthetics is Helen's purple cow.

Her uplines in her original company told her personal branding was a distraction. They weren't interested.

Today, some of those same uplines pay her to learn what they dismissed.

"Old uplines that wouldn't listen to me before have now come full circle and are learning from me — and even paying to learn from me. I take that as a massive compliment. They just didn't open their eyes as fast as I did."

The community model she's built reflects the naval analogy she loves: everyone on a ship has a job, and every job matters. The captain sets the direction. The crew owns the execution. It creates belonging, accountability, and a sense of contributing to something bigger than yourself.

Action Creates Clarity — Not the Other Way Around

One of the most repeated patterns Helen describes in people who get stuck — both newer network marketers and experienced ones making the shift online — is waiting for clarity before taking action.

It doesn't work that way.

"So many people sit back looking for everything to be perfect before they do something. But you need to go and do it before you get the clarity. Action is what creates the clarity — not the other way around."

She applies this to personal branding, to getting on camera, to starting a course, to moving companies. The fear of doing it wrong is what paralyzes people. The irony is that doing it wrong is the only way to learn how to do it right.

Her own first videos were rough. Her first lives were nerve-wracking. None of it looked the way it does now. But she kept going. And the people who see her on video today — natural, confident, authoritative — are only seeing years seven, eight, and nine. Not year one.

Self-responsibility is the word she returns to consistently. No excuses. Fail forward. Don't outsource your results to your circumstances, your company, your upline, or your past. Show up. Do the work. The clarity will come.

From a High Six-Figure Corporate Salary to 14 Income Streams

Helen now earns more than she did as a General Manager.

Starting from scratch. In an industry she knew nothing about. On a platform she had no presence on. In a country where the primary market she'd need to serve was twelve time zones away.

Fourteen income streams in total — built by applying the same problem-solving logic that got her through Guillain-Barré syndrome and boardroom politics and corporate restructures and company shutdowns. Find what works. Go deep on it. Teach it. Monetize it.

"I found a little niche I liked — personal branding. I love it. So I created a course on it. I still run that course today in its original format, just updated. It's another income stream. People are overcomplicating this in their own heads. Just put your head down, learn the skills, and turn around and monetize them. It's not as difficult as people think."

She still does consulting and accounting work. She still teaches a fitness class at her local gym every Monday morning — ten years and counting. She's a contributing author to a bestselling book, Journey to Success. She mentors inside AttractionMarketing.com. She runs her Online Crew coaching community.

The point isn't the volume of income streams. It's the mindset that created them: every skill is a potential asset, every interest is a potential product, every relationship is a potential opportunity — if you're willing to build in public and show up consistently.

What the Industry Needs to Hear — From Someone Who's Seen It From Both Sides

Helen has a perspective few people in network marketing have: she's seen the industry from the inside as a distributor, from the top as a mentor and trainer, and from the outside as a corporate executive who initially dismissed it entirely.

Her diagnosis of what's broken is sharp.

"There's still too much old school stuff going on. We need to modernize and professionalize the industry — have attraction marketing strategies throughout all companies at corporate level. Consumers are spoiled for choice now. Gone are the days you could just put something out there and someone would buy it. We need to nurture leads and build real relationships."

The companies that have closed, she argues, are symptoms of a deeper problem: distribution networks built on push tactics that create temporary enthusiasm and poor retention. When people feel like they were sold something rather than invited into something, they leave. And the company's foundation erodes.

The answer isn't a better pitch. It's a better relationship — built before the sale, sustained after it, and strong enough to survive the inevitable ups and downs of any business.

For the individual distributor, the lesson is the same one she's lived: build your brand. Own your audience. Invest in the relationship between you and the people who follow you. That's the thing that survives company shutdowns, comp plan changes, and corporate decisions you had no say in.

"You own how you show up. You own the value that you bring. You own the rapport you build with strangers. There are opportunities this industry gives you, paired with the online world, that are absolutely amazing. If more people took advantage of that with their own personal brand — because it's the only thing they actually own — they wouldn't hurt as much if something happened."
